The first snow leopard was mistaken for a cheetah

The first description of the snow leopard was produced by Buffon in 1761 in his Histoire naturelle. The author made a mistake by describing the animal as tameable and a hunter in Persia, because of a behavioral resemblance to the cheetah. Johann Schreber partially corrected this classification in 1775 by naming the species Uncia.
