An ancient legend attributed human descent to bears

For centuries, popular legends attributed to bears sexual habits similar to those of humans, even mentioning the abduction of women by males. This almost universal belief suggested that these unusual unions gave birth to children endowed with prodigious strength. The accounts of these abductions persisted through tales in Europe and Siberia until the 19th century.
