The bear was once associated with the devil

The bear is an animal that was totally demonized by Christian theologians inspired by Pliny the Elder and Saint Augustine. This devaluation served to erase the last traces of the animal cult in Europe by attributing deadly sins like lust or anger to it. Religious iconography went as far as endowing the devil with the fur, the muzzle, and the feet of this plantigrade.
