A bearded man was mistaken for Ariadne on an ancient sarcophagus
The sarcophagus of the Acceptii was reviewed by the historian from Lyon Charles Perrat in 1952. He demonstrated that the figure identified until then as Ariadne was in fact that of a man, whose cheek bears clearly visible beard hair. This rectification indicates that the monument instead depicts the deceased themselves, flanked by the husband on the left and his sleeping wife on the right.
