Marco Sanudo burned his own ships to seize Naxos

Marco Sanudo is a nephew of the Doge of Venice Enrico Dandolo. In 1205, he decided to destroy his own galleys after landing on the island of Naxos in order to forbid his men from retreating. This radical tactic allowed his troops to successfully sustain a five-week siege against the fortress of Apalyrou.
