The physician Robert Koch identified yaws as the true source of the bodily disfigurements observed in the Caroline Islands. Previously, these skin lesions were systematically attributed to syphilis by local observers and caregivers. His discovery occurred during the period of German colonization, while medical personnel were attempting to curb the spread of infectious diseases.
