An epidemic decimates ninety percent of a Micronesian island

The island of Kosrae saw ninety percent of its inhabitants disappear between 1838 and 1890 due to the arrival of new exogenous diseases. This decimation was caused by the total lack of immunity of the natives to the germs brought by Western sailors and settlers. The island population thus collapsed to reach only 300 people at the end of this period.
