A rodent that changes color as it grows

Santamartamys rufodorsalis is a nocturnal rodent possessing a reddish mane around its neck and large eyes adapted to its lifestyle. Young specimens are born with a grayish coat, then molt from the front to the back of the body. This molt allows them to reach the intense reddish color characteristic of adult individuals.
