A Way of the Cross designed to make pilgrims suffer

The Bom Jesus de Matosinhos sanctuary features a zigzag path leading to its Passion chapels. According to Monica Massara, this winding route on the hill was intended to make the ascent more arduous. The pilgrim was thus meant to physically feel the difficulties encountered by Jesus during his ordeal.
