The foundation of the Protestant Union in 1608

The Protestant Union is a political and military alliance born to counter religious tensions within the Holy Roman Empire. Six Protestant princes founded it on May 14, 1608 around Frederick IV in the face of the failure of imperial institutions. In response, the Catholic princes created in their turn the Catholic League on July 10, 1609 under the leadership of Maximilian of Bavaria.
