An extinguished candle illuminates the saint by Caravaggio

The painting Saint Jerome Writing by Caravaggio contains an extinguished candle that nevertheless illuminates the scene. This paradoxical choice allows the painter to symbolize divine presence through light in this dark room. The work kept in Valletta also gathers various traditional objects such as a skull and a crucifix.
