A Caravaggio painting was cut for a ransom

The painting Saint Jerome Writing was stolen from the co-cathedral in 1984. The thieves cut the edges of the canvas to extract it from its frame and sent pieces to museum director Marius Zerafa to prove that they held the work. A restoration had to be carried out in the laboratories of Rome after the recovery of the painting in 1988.
