A Caravaggio painting was stolen and recovered in Malta

The painting Saint Jerome Writing by Caravaggio has almost never left the island of Malta since the 17th century. The work was stolen in 1984 by unidentified individuals and then recovered four years later. It subsequently underwent a major restoration at the end of the 20th century to address its delicate state of conservation.
