A turtle represents Jerusalem

The Sagrada Família features two sculpted turtles at its base, facing respectively towards the sea and the mountain. This staging is inspired by a Middle Ages tradition where the city of Jerusalem was symbolized by a tower placed on a turtle, a figure of longevity. This architectural custom then evolved during the Renaissance, the tower being replaced by trumpets of fame as in the Orsini Park of Bomarzo in Italy.
