Do not fully load magazines

The SA80 is an assault rifle whose thirty-round magazines must not actually be filled to their maximum capacity. It is recommended to insert only twenty-eight rounds in order to preserve the spring and leave space for dust accumulation. This precaution applies to British infantrymen who must also carry their magazines upside down.
