Great Britain wanted to create its own rifle standard

The SA80 is an assault rifle whose design began in 1969 at the Royal Small Arms Factory. Political leaders refused to buy the American M16 and imposed a novel 4,85 x 49 mm ammunition, breaking with the NATO standard. This British ambition also aimed to place this ammunition at the heart of the alliance's trials scheduled for 1977.
