A nine-line poem composed in a dream

Cædmon's Hymn is the oldest surviving Old English poem, composed of only nine lines and forty-two words. Its author supposedly invented it during a dream according to accounts transmitted by historical texts. Twenty-one manuscript copies of this text have survived through the centuries, the oldest of which appear in works from the middle of the 8th century such as the Moore Bede.
