The initial rejection of the film La La Land

Damien Chazelle developed the script for La La Land in 2010 but faced refusal from studios, which considered the jazz musical genre to be definitively dead. To prove his talent, he directed the film Whiplash, which brought in nearly fifty million dollars in revenue. It is thanks to this success and the five Oscar nominations obtained in 2014 that the studios finally agreed to finance La La Land.
