A fake royal charter was used to claim ownership of the fair

Abbot Suger had Louis VI approve a charter dated 1124 to secure ownership of the Lendit fair. This text relied on an alleged transfer of the fair from Aachen to the site by Charles the Bald in 877. This false origin allowed the Abbey of Saint-Denis to durably secure the revenues of this prosperous market.
