The etymological origin of the Val d'Anniviers

The Val d'Anniviers has a name whose origin and meaning remain uncertain. According to the sociologist Bernard Crettaz, this name comes from the seasonal migration of its residents between the mountain and the plain. Other hypotheses exist however, such as Ad nives meaning towards the snows or even Anni visio evoking the annual visit of the bishop.
