Rue de la République wiped out the past

The construction of the Rue Impériale, which became the Rue de la République in Lyon, was the first major project of the Vaïsse era. Its completion required the destruction of 289 old houses in order to remodel the city center. This radical transformation turned the district into a bourgeois space featuring monumental buildings within a decade.
