A mass grave turned into a sugar beet field

The GDR turned the mass grave of the Demmin suicides into a sugar beet field to stifle the tragedy. This memorial site was deliberately neglected by the communist authorities who let it be overgrown by vegetation. The only visible landmark was then an isolated monument bearing the simple date of 1945.
