The largest mass suicide in Germany

The wave of suicides in Demmin represents the largest recorded mass suicide in Germany. In May 1945, several hundred panicked inhabitants committed suicide following atrocities committed by the Red Army. After trapping the population by blowing up the bridges, the Nazi authorities had abandoned the city to Soviet troops who engaged in massive looting and rapes.
