Caravaggio guided his brush using incisions

Caravaggio refused to go through the classic stage of preparatory drawing to create his works. He used a technique consisting of tracing fine incisions in the preparatory paint layer in order to obtain precise markers. Analyses have thus made it possible to identify some near the carafe and the cushion in his painting Bacchus.
