The word cagot referred to a cretin

The term cagot long referred to a cretin or a village idiot. This confusion came from the endogamy imposed on this population, sometimes causing a physical growth arrest. In 1867, the Société d'anthropologie de Paris nevertheless noted that the observed cagots presented no deformity.
