Meghan Markle broke the royal coat of arms tradition

Meghan Markle was granted her own coat of arms by decision of Queen Elizabeth II. Royal tradition usually requires combining the coats of arms of the father and the spouse, but since her father Thomas Markle did not possess a coat of arms, the College of Arms proceeded differently. This extremely rare scenario had already occurred in 1972 during the marriage of Richard of Gloucester to Birgitte van Deurs.
