Algerian orange producers rebuilt their lives in Uruguay
French orange farmers left Algeria during its independence to settle in Uruguay in order to develop citrus cultivation there. After difficult beginnings, they had to structure an entire export chain to distant markets to sell their production. An economic aid plan implemented in 1972 allowed the city of Salto to become a major hub for the harvesting and export of these fruits.
