Hybridization recreates the sweet orange

Academic research conducted in China in 2025 has made it possible to precisely identify the phylogeny and botanical parents of the sweet orange. Scientists reproduced this hybridization between a bitter orange tree and a mandarin tree using current citrus populations. This experiment generated 215 distinct hybrids, 3 of which proved to be resistant to citrus canker.
