Paprika was used against cholera in the 19th century

Paprika is a spice that became a culinary and medicinal emblem in Hungary. Its health benefits allowed it to be used in preventive medicine during the cholera epidemic of 1831. This usage was in addition to its role as an economic substitute for pepper, the cost of which had become prohibitive at that time.
