Chili peppers were long mistaken for oriental plants

The sweet pepper is a plant native to South and Central America cultivated since 7000 BC. Seeds originating from Mexico acclimatized so quickly in Asia and Africa that Europeans long believed in an oriental origin. This confusion persisted for many years during colonization.
