An eye is hidden in the navel of a Renaissance painting

The Saint Sebastian by Antonello da Messina hides a surprising anatomical peculiarity in his navel, which takes the shape of an eye. Spotted in 1983 by art historian Daniel Arasse, this detail shifts the proportions of the torso and dialogues with an arrow to symbolize a love at first sight between the viewer and the work. This subtlety could not, however, be perceived by the faithful at the time, because the painting was hung too far away in the San Giuliano church in Venice.
