South Dakota presents a complex political landscape that contradicts simplistic geographical divisions. The western region is generally conservative, but it paradoxically houses the most Democratic counties in the state due to the presence of Native American reservations. This Native American vote proved decisive for the victory of Democratic figures like Tom Daschle at the end of the 20th century.
