More than forty years without a Democratic governor in South Dakota

South Dakota has not had a Democratic governor since 1978. This long Republican dominance is illustrated by the uninterrupted succession of leaders from this party, including Mike Rounds and Dennis Daugaard. For the 2011-2013 legislature, the Senate counted thirty Republicans for only five Democrats.
