Cleopatra was the only sovereign of the Ptolemaic dynasty to master the Egyptian language. She strove to reconnect with the age-old traditions of pharaonic Egypt to attract the support of the people. She notably performed pharaonic rituals neglected by her predecessors and relied on the natives to ensure the succession of her son Caesarion in 42 BC.
