Cleopatra had her own brother assassinated to rule alone

Cleopatra eliminated Ptolemy XIV upon her return to Alexandria in July 44 BCE. This brother and co-ruler represented both a useless sovereign and a potential rival for power. Having already given birth to her son, she possessed a successor and was thus able to rule as sole sovereign.
