Napoleon I is a descendant of the Man in the Iron Mask according to a rumor spread by a pamphlet under the First Empire. This legend claimed that the prisoner had married the daughter of the governor of the Île Sainte-Marguerite named Monsieur Bonpart, producing offspring who were smuggled to Corsica. Emmanuel de Las Cases recounted this anecdote on July 12, 1816, in his Mémorial de Sainte-Hélène, specifying that the fallen emperor found it amusing.
