Jean-Luc Mélenchon claimed that an accident at a nuclear power plant upstream from the capital would require the evacuation of 12 million people. This statement made on December 5, 2021, during a rally at La Défense was widely contested by experts. The latter recalled that the Chernobyl disaster had only caused evacuation within a radius of 30 kilometers.
