The first Ethiopian sovereign vaccinated against smallpox

Yohannes IV is the first Ethiopian sovereign to receive the modern smallpox vaccine which was gradually replacing traditional methods. This sovereign, described as conservative, also surrounded himself with a foreign doctor at court for the first time. It is the Greek Nicholas Parisis, testifying to timid medical advances under his reign including the introduction of mercury to treat syphilis.
