Smoking is punished by mutilation in Ethiopia

Yohannes IV is a very pious Ethiopian emperor who led an extremely rigorous religious policy. To impose his vision of Orthodox Christianity, he established fearsome corporal punishments for the faithful. Ethiopian Christians who smoked were thus inflicted with a mutilation of the lips.
