A traditional submission to unify Ethiopia

Menelik had to submit formally with a stone around his neck during the treaty of Wadara in 1878. This traditional humiliation allowed the sovereign Yohannes IV to assert his hegemony by adopting him as his eldest son and ally. In exchange for this allegiance, the ruler of Shewa had to pay regular tributes including notably hundreds of mules, horses and tens of thousands of dollars.
