A stage of the Vuelta a España was bought for 30,000 francs per rider

Laurent Fignon revealed that a sum of 30,000 francs was paid to each rider of his Système U team during the 1987 Vuelta a España. The team of leader Luis Herrera sought in this way to ensure their harmlessness to avoid crosswinds during the final stage. The winner Luis Herrera has nevertheless always denied these accusations made by the French rider.
