A capital execution caused a rift between Fermat and the judiciary
In January 1658, the priest Jean Montralon was sentenced and hanged at the instigation of the first president of the Parliament Gaspard de Fieubet. This decision angered the mathematician Pierre de Fermat, who was a councilor at the Parliament and whose investigation had proven the innocence of the accused. Because of this intense enmity, the portrait of Fermat was long absent from the Salle des Illustres of the Capitole de Toulouse, of which Fieubet was the initiator.
