The harvest festival is a Christian thanksgiving celebration that the Nazi regime transformed into a major national holiday. National Socialism sought to link this tradition to the pagan cult of the Germanic god Odin, without much success. This instrumentalization was led by the Reich Ministry of Public Enlightenment and Propaganda, directed in particular by State Secretary Leopold Gutterer.
