The high inbreeding of the Faroe pony

The Faroe pony is an island pony that undergoes a significant genetic bottleneck due to the reduction of its population. In 2022, 11.3% of the horses of the breed show an inbreeding coefficient higher than 30%. This situation leads to fertility problems in mares, 30% of which suffer from equine endometritis in 2019 and 2021.
