Ernest Shackleton stopped 190 kilometers from the South Pole

Ernest Shackleton is a polar explorer who narrowly missed conquering the South Pole in January 1909. With his team, he progressed to 88° 23′ S by using Manchurian ponies to pull the loads. Due to a lack of provisions, they had to turn back after planting a flag given by Queen Alexandra.
