A record of proximity to the South Pole in 1902

Robert Falcon Scott and his companions set a historic record for approaching the South Pole in 1902. Having left on November 1st of that year with dogs that all eventually perished due to a poor diet, the trio progressed despite their lack of experience on the ice. On December 30th, they reached a record latitude that they estimated at 82° 17′ S, thus surpassing by nearly 400 km the previous record held by Carsten Borchgrevink.
