Captain Cook's polar record lasted nearly half a century

Captain Cook is an explorer who pushed the limits of southern navigation. During his second voyage, he managed to penetrate beyond the polar circle to reach 71° 10′ S on January 30, 1774 with his ship Resolution. Blocked by ice, he thus established an exploration record that was only beaten 49 years later.
