A funeral pyre attempt was narrowly avoided

Denethor is a Steward of Gondor who ordered his servants to build a funeral pyre for him and his son Faramir. The man believed his son was mortally wounded and had lost his mind following his use of the palantír. Peregrin Took and Gandalf stopped this sacrifice just in time, although Denethor succeeded in immolating himself.
