Border supermarkets were born from smuggling

Ventas are points of sale installed on the Spanish side of the border to take advantage of tax disparities. These structures evolved over time to transform from simple refreshment stalls into real supermarkets. In 1993, the municipality of Sare still counted fourteen on its bordering territory.
