The financial return on works of art is very low
The art market offers on average a return significantly lower than that of stocks, for significant volatility. Investors observe this gap despite the tax advantages that works benefit from in many countries. In 1986, Baumol thus estimated at 0.55% per year this return over a period of twenty years, against 2.5% for financial securities.
